Conflict from the lens of Depleting Natural Resources and Climate Change

The International Day of Peace is celebrated on the 21st of September to bring humanity together in solidarity and commit to Peace above all differences. It is dedicated for world peace and de-escalating conflicts. The day also marks the 75th anniversary of the United Nations which will see a high level meeting of the UN General Assembly on the theme, “The Future We Want, the UN We Need: Reaffirming our Collective Commitment to Multilateralism”

To observe the International Day of Peace 2020, the Indian Youth Climate Network (IYCN) in collaboration with Enactus LSR is organising a webinar to highlight how environmental degradation, competition for scarce resources, poor governance of renewable natural resources, and the transboundary natural resource dynamics and pressures act as drivers of conflict. This webinar will investigate how these drivers of conflict weaken the fragile socio-economic dynamics, and heighten political and security tensions, thereby giving way to violent conflicts.

“Climate change is no longer some far-off problem; it is happening here; it is happening now.”

The esteemed panel of speakers comprises of Dr. Bremley Lyngdoh, Founder and CEO, Worldview Impact Foundation, Prof. P.K. Shajahan, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai and  Ms. Dhriti Pathak,Project Associate, The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), New Delhi. The webinar will also have a special message for the youth from Ms. Archana Soreng, Member of UN Secretary General’s Youth Advisory Group on Climate Change.

Join us for this informative session on 21st September at 19:00 hours!
The webinar will focus on the following:
  1. How does climate change act as a catalyst and a threat multiplier on the available natural resources?
  2. How does conflict over renewable natural resources interact with socio-economic dynamics, political and security tensions and stressors?
  3. What are the key principles or strategies for effective intervention and peaceful conflict resolution?
  4. What is the significance of Multilateralism in managing conflicts triggered by resource scarcity and climate change?
